What are Anabolic Steroids?

Before discussing about anabolic steroids, we should what are the steroids. Steroids are basically treatment for the patients of some diseases. They are actually synthetic hormones used to fulfill the deficiency of natural hormones in the body. Anabolic steroids are part of steroids. They are very similar to the sex hormones of males. Normally doctors prescribe them to the patients who have a problem of not having puberty at the right time or to the patients suffering from Cancer and Aids, who loose muscles very quickly. Anabolic Steroids are legal steroids which mean that they cannot be sold without prescription of doctor. But still there are people other than patients like athletes and sportsmen, who want to enhance their performance and build their muscle and body mass, use these anabolic steroids. Other type of steroid is Corticosteroid which is less controversial as compared to Anabolic Steroids because it does not helps in building up muscle mass. They are used for the treatment of allergy and autoimmune diseases. For example Cortisone is a common steroid normally prescribed by doctors for the treatment of skin after being bitten by some insect and the skin has swollen due to that. Another type is prednisone used for the arthritis and lupus.

There are different types of Anabolic Steroids available in the market which does the same function almost. Anabolic steroids works just same like male testosterone but they work bit faster and also gives better result. The process of muscle healing is also done by the anabolic steroids. As anabolic steroids are excellent performance enhancers so sportsmen around the world tend to use them. But now due to very strict rules set by the entire world’s sporting organizations, if any player or athlete is found using illegal steroids then they would be getting serious punishments for that. But still they are being used and often its quantity is much more as a normal patient would be using it. They are used in the form of stacking (mixture of oral and injectable form) or in the form of pyramiding in which the doses are taken in cycles ranging from 6 to 12 weeks.

Where anabolic steroids have so many benefits it has great side effects as well. Some of the side effects include tumors in the liver and kidneys, increase in the level of cholesterol and blood pressure, retention of fluid, jaundice, testicles getting shrink, loss of hair or baldness, infertility and cancer of prostate etc. in females male pattern baldness, irregularity in menstrual cycles, increment in the facial hairs and voice getting deep etc are common side effects. Despite of these side effects athletes are still using them and many are caught as well.
